Chapter Fifteen

The next couple of days dragged by, each one ticking closer to the full moon and the next time the incubus would claim its victim. Emery tried to find his focus, sitting naked out in the garden in his self-styled temple of nature. Like the balcony of his bedroom, the four elements were all around him.

“Emery?” At Alex’s call, Emery rose to his feet, concluding his meditation and giving thanks to the elemental forces on which he called.

“I’m here.” He slipped on a pair of sandals and strode out from his sanctuary. “What is it?” Emery watched as Alex approached, a white silk robe draped over one shoulder and a black card in his hand.

“You have an invitation to an exclusive weekend at the Huntleigh stately home. It’s at the Huntleigh manor house tomorrow evening—strictly invite only, numbers limited. You may bring two guests.” Alex wafted a large black card. “Hand delivered and overly dramatic—matte black, embossed in gold lettering, with magic symbols in silver around the edges.”

“Mean anything?” Emery asked, furrowing his forehead as he approached his husband, but Alex shook his head.

“No. All of us have read it in different ways. We think that it’s just for appearances only. You know, con the mugs.”

“I hoped it might be more than that.” Emery took the card, studied it intently, then kissed Alex.

“You know, it might be at that.” Alex tapped his chin. “If you were just interested in the craft, you’d like the notion of the card with its symbols. However, a true practitioner, as we are, would not only recognize the symbols but know that they’re senseless.”

“A sham. Just for show.” Emery nodded. “Yes, lover, I think you may be right. Which means when I curl my lip and point out the lack of meaning, it’ll show that I have a much deeper knowledge and understanding.”

“Exactly. In a way, he’s played right into your hands. The character you’re playing would do exactly that—dismissive that Huntleigh’s nothing more than a two-bit magician who hosts orgies.”

“Which will hopefully sting his pride into revealing a lot more than that. Yes. Perfect.” Emery pulled Alex close. “Part of me wishes I could have my Guardian at my side, but Kadin is very adept and so is Luke. I already feel a connection with Luke. We spent some time together in my sanctuary earlier, strengthening that connection. He felt instantly comfortable there. It was a good idea having them to stay in the house. I know you’re worried, and Luke told me Garen is, too. Understandable, since you’re both used to protecting and not sitting back.”

“I’ve spent time getting all the plans I can gather for Huntleigh House.” Alex nuzzled against Emery’s collarbone. “We’re likely to have to take on that demon there. I want to have memorized every room—and any hidden spaces and passageways. Perhaps Kadin could get Grim to check for them, too. Garen and I have found a cottage doing bed and breakfast to stay in close by. If Kadin puts anything they find on a memory stick, Grim could bring it to us.
